Martin Brandau absolvierte nach dem Abitur eine Lehre als Fotolaborant bei dem s/w Handfachlabor Grauwert in Hamburg. Von 1996-2001 Studium der „Visuellen Kommunikation“ an der Bauhaus Universität in Weimar. Nach dem Diplom war er von 2001-2004 als freier Fotograf und Bildredakteur bei der Wochenzeitung „DIE ZEIT“ tätig. Von 2004-2008 eigenes digitales/analoges Fotolabor in Hamburg. 2008 ging er fuhr längere Zeit nach Accra, Ghana um freie Foto- und Videoarbeiten umzusetzen. Er leitete verschiedene Workshops am Goethe Institut Accra. Seine Arbeiten wurden dort u.a. in den europäischen Kulturinstituten Alliance Francaise und im Goethe Institut gezeigt. Seit 2014 lebt er als freier Fotograf und Dozent in Berlin.

After graduating from high school, Martin Brandau completed an apprenticeship as a photo lab technician at the b/w handheld lab Grauwert in Hamburg. From 1996-2001 he studied „Visual Communication“ at the Bauhaus University in Weimar. After graduation he worked as a freelance photographer and picture editor for the weekly newspaper „DIE ZEIT“ from 2001-2004. From 2004-2008 he ran his own digital/analog photo lab in Hamburg. In 2008 he went to Accra, Ghana for a longer time to make independent photo and video works. He conducted several workshops at the Goethe Institute Accra. His works were shown there at the European cultural institutes Alliance Francaise and Goethe Institute, among others. Since 2014 he has been living in Berlin as a freelance photographer and lecturer.
